“I’m very good at marketing myself,” Atkin told The Times. “I do what I do, and I’m good for what I do, but I’m not the best hairstylist.” As The Times quickly pointed out, that couldn't be further from the truth: WWD and Variety are honoring her with a Stylemaker of the Year award this week. Plus, she currently runs the website Mane Addicts as well as the styling school Mane University, and she has a hair-care line, Ouai, set to hit shelves next year. Some could argue that she is, in fact, the most influential hairstylist of the moment.
With a schedule and client book as packed as Atkin's, we wanted to know how she takes care of her own hair. "That’s gonna be a really quick call," she tells Refinery29. "I am the last person whose hair I care about." That's Atkin's modesty talking again — she actually has the chicest, glossiest lob this side of Calabasas. Click ahead to find out her full routine, including who cuts her hair. (And if you're curious about other cool-girl stylists' routines, we've got you covered here.)

"I have fine hair, but a lot of it, with wavy texture. I color it once a year by just getting the ends highlighted by George Papanikolas. And I got a great cut from Kevin Murphy to shag out my lob that I've had. It's all about wash-and-go.
"I do Pilates a lot, so I like my hair to last as long as I can. [My hair] is really big the first three to four days [after washing]. I usually wash it when my husband starts complaining that I smell like a grandpa."

"A lot of girls go to the gym and get oily roots and dry ends, which is so annoying. I like to wash my scalp with something really cleansing, like Bumble and bumble Sunday, and then wash my ends with something more moisturizing, like Clear Scalp & Hair Nourishing Shampoo. The different shampoos balance out the oily scalp versus the dry ends.
"[Post-cleansing], on my 45-minute commute to Calabasas [to style the Kardashians], I’ll put my wet hair in a middle-parted, low ponytail. I loop the ponytail through, so my ends stay straight. That gives a cool little dent to my hair.”
Bumble and bumble Sunday Shampoo, $25, available at Bumble and bumble; Clear Scalp & Hair Nourishing Shampoo, $5.99, available at Drugstore.com.

“The Sachajuan Ocean Mist is like a conditioning spray and a surf spray had a baby. It gives that model-off-duty texture without feeling crunchy. I use that and I don’t use a curling iron, flat iron, or blowdryer.
"If I'm going out with clients, I finish them and then I'm exhausted and just don't care. It's usually a center-parted bun or natural and down."
Sachajuan Ocean Mist, $31, available at Birchbox.

“If my hair is really dry and I need a treatment, I’ll use Shiffa hair oil, because it’s super-moisturizing and washes out of the hair without feeling dirty. I put my hair in a bun or braid, and leave it in for an hour to go to SoulCycle or get a massage.”
Shiffa Invigorating Hair Oil, $87, available at Shiffa.
