There’s nothing worse than watching the Oscars and not having seen any of the movies. Well, there are worse things. War, famine, systemic racism. Those are all worse. But for the purposes of awards show viewing issues, the Oscars one is pretty bad. Although the show has well-documented diversity issues, it's still a reliable compendium of some of the best films of the year. And you can stream more than half of them online, theAssociated Press reports.
You can catch five of the eight best picture nominees online, with Brooklyn to follow shortly. Almost two-thirds — nine of the 15 total films — with acting nominees are streaming now on the internet . 57 features and shorts have been nominated, and 30 are available for streaming somehow or other. (That’s not even counting less licit means of viewing films online, but you’d never do that. Would you?)
Here’s your guide to streaming those movies.
Best Picture and Best Directing
Five of the Best Picture nominees are also nominated for the directing prize.
HBO subscribers are in luck; Mad Max: Fury Road is the only film hosted on a subscription service. It’s also available for purchase on iTunes, Google Play or Amazon.
Bridge of Spies and The Martian can be bought or rented on all major streaming services.
Spotlight and Room are available for purchase only, but coming to rental on Tuesday, February 23.
Brooklyn will also be available for streaming on 2/23.
The Big Short and The Revenant are viewable only in theaters. You can advance-purchase them and there is a movie called The Revenant on Amazon, but it is not the one you’re thinking of.
Best Acting
With the exception of Mad Max, all the films listed above have acting nominees.
Both Trumbo and Steve Jobs are available for purchase and rental right now, although be careful that you get the right Trumbo as there are two of them.
You can buy either Creed or The Danish Girl right now, but you’ll have to wait until Tuesday to rent The Danish Girl.
Carol comes online March 4, a week after the ceremony. Joy, The Hateful Eight, and 45 Years are currently theater-only experiences, although the former two are available for preorder.
Screenplay Nominees
You can watch Ex Machina on Amazon Prime or rent or purchase now.
Inside Out can be rented only on Amazon or purchased anywhere else. Straight Outta Compton is available for rental or purchase everywhere.
